The virtual office takeover: why we love remote working at CS2
Remote working seems to get equal measures of hype, distrust and sometimes, hate. With over 3.7 million employees working from home at least half the time, chances are you either can’t live without it, you want to try it, you dislike your colleagues when they are remote or have stumbled across someone working at your local coffee shop, WeWork location, or on vacation.
At CS2, we work remote (apart from a few team off-sites and client meetings), with team members in different areas of California, Washington, New England and past team members in other areas of the US and Europe. We have experienced the impact remote working has had on the team’s well being and their productivity, so thought we would share some of the benefits that we really believe in when it comes to being a remote team.

The reasons we started and will continue to be a remote team at CS2:
1. Happier Team
Giving up the daily commute grind is an immediate way to improve your daily life. The average full-time remote worker gains back the equivalent of 11 work days every year and this is probably a huge underestimate for some people (speaking to you Bay Area!).
Your team can choose to spend the extra time working more, on other hobbies, or time with family. Whatever they spend their extra time on it’s likely to improve their mood and reduce their stress, compared to a life-draining commute. A happier and less stressed employee is usually a better and more effective employee. Win Win.
2. Healthier Team
No uncomfortable lower back destroying commute + more time to exercise and get outside + access to better home-cooked food + less stress trying to complete the non-work to-do list = a healthier team with less sick days, consistent energy and sustained productivity.
3. More Productive
Fewer unnecessary meetings, fewer interruptions from coworkers and a happier and healthier team allows the team to be more purposeful with their time and more effective at their job. If you are like this guy, you probably need to work from home more often.
4. Wider Talent Pool
Why limit your talent pool to everyone within a 50-mile radius? There is a whole country/world full of talented and capable people who are looking for work and we have a ton of technologies (Slack, Monday, Google Drive, etc) at our fingertips designed to help us work better together. Many of our clients are based in the Bay Area and face serious competition when trying to hire; why not search outside of your local area?
Remote working not only improves efficiency, productivity, and overall happiness. It can also have an impact on your bottom line. Common costs like buying or leasing a physical office, purchasing equipment, or reimbursing daily travel can come with a hefty price tag. Employers offering at least part-time remote work flexibility collectively save $44 billion each year.
As an added bonus, remote workers are especially green employees:
“Existing telecommuters reduce greenhouse gas emissions by the equivalent of taking over 600,000 cars off the road for a year. If the work-at-home workforce expanded to include those who could and wanted to telecommute half of the time, the GHG savings would equate to taking 10 million cars off the road.” - The 2017 State of Telecommuting
These are just a few of the benefits, the list could go on.
Before diving into remote work, take a look at the bigger picture
We believe the most important factor in pushing remote working further than it is today is making sure you are more effective working from home than in an office. This will instill trust and hopefully create more momentum for remote working as companies start realizing the benefits. This takes a new approach to work than you may be used to.
